Hello All,

As a special treat to end the football season, the WVU Lone Star Chapter is raffling off a full size, game worn, football helmet, autographed by one the greatest Mountaineers of all time, Pat White. Raffles tickets are $10 and portion of the proceeds will be going raise money for our annual Toys for Tots drive. Check out the pics, and click the link below to buy a ticket!! The winner will be drawn at our last official watching part of the year, Dec. 1st, when WVU travels to Tampa to face the USF Bulls. Toys for Tots Drive Fall 2011

For several years, the WVU Lone Star Chapter has participated in the Toy’s for Tot’s drive leading into the Christmas Holiday. This year, we will continue our participation with three separate events. First, on November the 12th, for the football match-up against Cincinnati, we will hold two watching parties: one at out usual location of the Ragin Cajun, and another at Boondoggles in Clear Lake. We will collect Toys, and raffle off select items at these events in support of our Toys for Tots drive.

We will hold one final drive at the Thursday, Dec. 1st USF watching party. At this event we will present our collection to representatives of the United State Marine Corps, the sponsor of the nationwide Toys for Tots effort. So mark both dates on your calendar, and come out and support a great cause!!!

Fall Networking Night, Armadillo Palace, Oct. 11th, 6-8pm.

Over the past year, the WVU Lone Star Chapter has held two networking nights across the Houston area. The events are scheduled on a weekday night, and are designed to allow alumni in a specific area of town mingle and get to know what connections are available through the local Alumni Chapter. The past events have been held at Vintropolis in the West Chase area, and Boondoggles in Clear Lake.

This year we are very excited to host our first Networking Night in the Rice Village area, and at the very “Texas” locale, the Goode Co. Armadillo Palace (5015 Kirby). We have a reservation for October 11th, from 6-8 pm. CST. So, if you work in the Rice Village, or Downtown area, or if you just want to spend some time with a bunch of other WVU alumni, put this date on your calendar and don’t miss it!!

In addition to all the great company, the full Menu from Goode Co.’s famous BBQ will be available for dinner!!

New Fall Membership Drive

The Houston WVU Lone Star Chapter is starting its first annual Fall Membership Drive. The Lone Star chapter’s primary mission is to maintain your link back to Morgantown, and keep you in touch with the over 1,000 Houston area alumni. Our chapter hosts activities year round to keep you connected, including Houston area community service events, watching parties, networking nights, high school recruiting nights, and our famous Lone Star Chapter Shrimp Boil. In an effort to attract as many members as possible, we are only asking for $10 per individual, and $15 per family for 2011 dues. For more information, please don’t hesitate to email!!! Fall High School Recruiting Nights

The Lone Star Chapter, through WVU’s National Alumni Recruiting Network, has been active in the past several years during the fall season attending local ISD’s and private schools to promote WVU to families. We have been quite successful in steering Houston students to WVU and the students are very successful at WVU.

The dates of the college nights are regulated by the state, and most of the fairs in the Houston area happen in a two week span in October. This year, we have several conflicting fairs, so without enough volunteers, we simply will not be able to represent WVU in districts where we have participated in the past. WVU does a fantastic job with supplying training and information….and we have honestly discovered that alumni are great recruiters, and any question can be answered with a smile, and an answer along the lines of, “I am a proud WVU alum and not a paid recruiter. I don’t know the answer to that particular question, but I will be happy to give you the contact information for our admissions department, and they will be happy to answer all of your questions.” You will have plenty of information at your fingertips….and it is so energizing to talk to people about all that WVU offers students and families! It is important to have two people present, and substitute volunteers are important since plans change, people get sick, etc. Please consider volunteering-it really is fun!

CyFair ISD, Richard Berry Center, 5-8 p.m., sign in 3:30-5, hospitality room 4-7:30 ***this is a very big, very busy fair-we need three people behind our table (max allowed)

Spring Branch ISD (the second of the two nights) – Spring Woods High School, 6-8 p.m., sign in and dinner served from 5-6 p.m.

Thursday, Oct 6:
Fort Bend ISD (the second of the two nights) – Ridge Point High School, 6-8 p.m., sign in at 5 p.m.d

Tuesday, Oct 11:
Conroe ISD – Lone Star Convention Center, 6:30-8:30 p.m. sign in is usually around 5, light dinner served
Wednesday, Oct 12:

Katy ISD –Leonard Merrill Center, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., sign in is usually early, ***this is a very big, very busy fair-we need three people behind our table (max allowed-although last year they allowed us to have 4!)

Thursday AFTERNOON, Oct 13:
*Concordia Lutheran High School – this is an afternoon fair…1:15 – 3 p.m.

Thursday, Oct 13:
Klein ISD – Champion Forest Baptist Church, 6-9 p.m., sign in usually begins around 5:30 p.m.

Thursday MORNING, Oct 14:
Houston Christian High School – 8-9:30 a.m., this is a 7:30 a.m. sign in time, breakfast provided

Nov 30
Clear Creek ISD – Clear Falls HS, 7-9 p.m., sign in usually around 5:30
& Sometime in late November or the first week of December will be Pearland/Friendswood ISDs

And, if any of you live in Humble and know the date of the college night, please let us know. They host a wonderful fair, but I haven’t received any information from them this year!

Fall Community Service

The WVU Lone Star Chapter has a long history of providing community service back to the Houston metropolitan area. Over the past few years we have participated in fundraiser walks, food drives, and cooked for the Ronald McDonald House. This fall, we are please to announce that we will be organizing a work day with the Houston Food Bank. WVU vs PITT National Game Watch Feb. 24th

Join us Thursday February 24th at 8:00 pm in Midtown to watch our Mountaineers take on the PITT Panthers for the second time this season in Pittsburgh. We will be getting together at Buffalo Wild Wings on Gray St. to watch the game on ESPN HD. Specials for the night includes BW3′s Boneless Thursday which means 60 cent boneless wings.

Join us Saturday March 5th, at 11am CST, at the Ragin Cajun on Westheimer and Gessner to watch our Mountaineers finish the regular season against the Louisville Cardinals. This will be the last game before the Big East Tournament, so come out and cheer on Bob Huggins’ team as they finish up the season!
